Day 4 - Feeling the Miles
Jeff and Gavin aren't sure if it is the 15+ miles they did yesterday or if the hike really was harder, but it felt like a much harder hike today even though they "only" went about 13 miles. The good news is that when they were snuggled up in bed Gavin was not hungry. That might have been because they were blessed again by an extra meal today. Leapfrog Cafe was at Hogpen Gap set up to feed hikers. In case you want to learn more about his story check out this article all about him. It's pretty fascinating. Trail Angel Spotlight: Fresh Ground and his Leapfrog Cafe - The Trek You can also donate to this service that he provides. He doesn't charge the hikers anything for the food. As a mom, knowing her boy is hungry (not being able to feed him) but also knowing he was fed and fed for free - It's a HUGE blessing.
Jeff sent me a couple good pictures of a shelter and a privy. As you're hiking the A.T. you'll come across shelters and privies along the way. They are set up every so many miles to help hikers out but believe me they are only so nice. Even when we hiked the A.T as a family several years ago for 50-ish miles we didn't use either. The shelters usually have mice and I'm not a fan of that. And the privy - well as you can image it's not great. However, they were thankful for the shelter that first night when the rain was really bad.
You can even buy a poster that has basically all the privies along the entire A.T. Yes, you really can. The Crappalachian Trail Privy Poster - 18x24 - privies from every state — Sarah Jones Decker
Do you HAVE to use a privy? No, you don't. I'll let you decide for yourself what your preference may be......
